In Ireland we were alerted to your discussion of a mast on school property by Martin Weatherall of the Canadian W.E.E.P. Iniative.
Last March we were lucky to have Prof. Olle Johansson, of the Karolinska Instituet, Stockholm (home of the Nobel Prize), explain the dangers of these towers. Children absorb 75 percent of the radiation into their brains, prompting brain tumours, cancers and leukaemias.
In Ireland were have gone farther along the road with "clusters" of cancers emerging. On Friday I met two families living in the shadow of a mast on the local police station. In one house there was the death of a 30-year-old mother who left a son with learning difficulties and her father has had three strokes since Nov. 2009. In the second house, a 22-year-old has an inoperable brain tumour and his father is being treated for Grade 2 lung cancer.
Prudence would dictate that until the technology can be guaranteed 100% safe, its use should be limited. Prof. Johansson said he could detect changes in human DNA after only an hour's exposure to a computer monitor. What does that say about cell phone towers? The Parents' Coalition of Montgomery County, Maryland thanks Mr. Weigel for forwarding us this information.
The picture shows the cell tower on the playground of Daly Elementary School in Germantown, Maryland, as a reminder that the MCPS Board of Education has already placed a cell phone tower on an elementary school playground without any discussion of the issues mentioned in Mr. Weigel's correspondence.
