@mcpssuper Spends $32K in October Fighting Families of Children with Disabilities #equitywarriorfail

Another day, another $32K!

MCPS and the Board of Education continue to spend excessive amounts of money fighting families of children with disabilities. The $32,398 sum listed below just represents the fees for outside counsel for only ONE month (October 2013)! And Phil Kauffman and pals spent another few thousand in October on the Rock Terrace issue ($8,699). (The Carney Kelehan bill for October 2013 totaled $57,781. The largest amount was for policy matters ($33,232), the largest part of which related to subpoenas and requests for student records ($8,699).)

Special Education Legal Expenses

Special education legal fees for outside counsel for October 2013 totaled $32,398. The year-to-date total of $54,247 is $42,378 (43.9%) lower than the same period in the previous year. In addition, total year-to-date special education legal costs of $54,247 is $106,133 (66.2%) lower than the budgeted amount of $160,380 for this time period.

  1. MCPS continues to spend excessive monies on private attorneys to malign parents of special ed children, who are seeking placements based on the child's individual needs. The costs accrued in an adversarial environment could be better used on the children.
