Superintendent issue divides school board candidates in Monday forum

ROCKVILLE— Four of five candidates for the Montgomery County Public Schools Board of Education at-large seat said the board should explain a decision it made behind closed doors – firing  a superintendent – at a forum Monday.

“I guess I was part of that decision,” said incumbent member Phil Kauffman about the board choosing not to explain a superintendent decision.
Kauffman said he did not think the board should explain a decision to fire or not renew a contract because it is a personnel matter.
In February 2015, the board members did not agree on whether to renew previous superintendent Josh Starr’s contract and Starr resigned...
