Proposed Bill MC6-19 to restrict candidates running for office in Montgomery County

Del Eric Luedtke (D-14) has posted a bill, MC6-19, that would throw an additional roadblock before candidates running for office here in Montgomery County. The bill would add an additional obstacle to people wanting to run by requiring candidates running for County Executive to collect signatures from 1,000 registered voters in the county before being allowed to file; require candidates running for county council at-large seat to collect signatures from 500 registered county voters before being allowed to file; and require candidates who want to run for county council from a district to collect 250 signatures from registered voters within the county.

Apparently our celebrated public financing and term limits changes encouraged TOO many people to run for office in our fair county. So confusing! So, Del. Luedtke has come up with a way to restrict the races.

Please let your state delegates and senators know that we don’t want restrictions put on people who want to run for office in Montgomery County.

  1. What is motivating Luedtke to restrict accesss to the American political system? I fimd this extre, ely disturbing and suspiscious, especially consideringnall the allegations of voter tampering in the recent election.

  2. Interesting...I usually agree w/Eric but this I'll have to think about while I read all the wording.

Is it that hard to get 1000 signatures? I honestly don't know, but I see people w/clipboards at Metro stations, grocery stores, and farmers' markets and the like with petitions frequently, not to mention door-to-door canvassing by volunteers. I can't imagine that it would be hard to find 1000 registered voters in my neighborhood alone. Candidates for County Executive are the only ones who would require that many signatures; it's not as if everyone running for any County office needs 1000 registered voters...but at the same time I'd prefer that obstacles not be thrown up either...

    1. It is difficult if you are running for the first time, with little money and no ground organization. It is much, much easier for incumbents. This is an enormous roadblock that will discourage potential candidates and a favor to established politic parties. When everyone is celebrating the new faces in Congress and on our local level, think about how someone new to politics, with no money, would collect 1,000 signatures, or hundreds of signatures. Also note the requirement to make sure each person is a registered voter, instead of just a resident of the county. This is a bad bill that limits voter choice.
