MCPS 13th in State on Algebra High School Assessment

Passing rate on the 2010 Algebra High School Assessment, MCPS ranked just 13th among Maryland's 24 school systems at 88.1% either Advanced or Proficient.  Decidedly middle of the pack results for MCPS.

Interesting however that when ranking the school districts by "Advanced only" MCPS ranked 5th.

  1. Students are pushed into higher level math far sooner than their readiness. I work in an elementary in a community with about 30% poverty. It's shocking how many students in 5th grade are still counting on their fingers and don't know how to monitor their answers for making sense. i.e. recent example in 4th grade: 10-5=50
The student read her answer as written, but she wasn't monitoring for making sense! I see this far too often.

  2. To MCPS Parent and Teacher: I think that students are pushed into higher level math before they are ready so that Jerry Weast can report to his media sycophants that he has X percent of students in "higher level math". It's all about improving numbers on his Seven Keys, and "looking good." The question for me is why don't more teachers speak up?
