MCPS School Day Shorter Than Most Other MD Districts

Part 3:

Examining more data from the State Dept of Education website and saw some remarkable new information. All data is taken via downloads from www.mdreportcard.org

And finally I took a look at the length of the Instructional Day. (See previous posts Part 1 and Part 2)

Again MCPS ranked poorly compared to other Maryland school systems.

MCPS has an approximately 3/4 of an hour per day shorter school day then the four districts with the longest school day.

That is the equivalent of aproximately 20 additonal school days over the course of the 175 day school year.

  1. One of the biggest cultural socks that immigrant parents who come from South Korea and Taiwan is how short our school day is. I remember once a parent made a formal complaint because in her country the school day lasted until 5pm.

  2. A quick look at HCPS website shows that Howard Co. middle schools are in session for the same amount of hours as MCPS. Not sure how they can have .4 more hours.

  3. I think MCPS has a 184 scheduled school days... or something like that. It's 180 required by law.

  4. That must be the "shorter time" argument...they are spreading the time over 4 extra days. I know that HoCo doesn't have as many built in days as MCPS. Talk about misleading data.
