Due to a dramatic spike in unexcused absences this past spring, principal Alan Goodwin and other principals from around the county are attempting to implement a stricter attendance policy.
As of now, the only penalty for skipping class is a zero for work due on days of unexcused absences. But this penalty doesn’t seem to deter many students from skipping class, especially on days when there is no formal assessment.
“With this year’s attendance policy, it gave me more peace of mind when I skipped class,” an anonymous student said...

Spike in Skipping Class
black&white: Principals in favor of stricter attendance policy in the fall
I was watching the BOE meeting this week, and apparently Frieda Lacey was talking to some teachers on one of the graduation buses, and she learned (SHOCK AND SURPRISE) that the "loss of credit" change (concerning absenteeism) wasn't working! Then someone (don't remember who) congratulated those teachers for having the courage to "speak up."
ReplyDeleteHmmmm: a year has gone by. How many total educational hours were lost by kids who knew they could skip class without penalty? And didn't folks say this was a bad idea from the start? And what would have happened if Frieda Lacey had not been on that bus....we would have the same foolish policy for another school year?
