$3.8 Million AMEX Bill 6 months into fiscal year

A picture is worth a thousand words...

How many MCPS staff have credit cards?
What do they use them for?
Are lunches, dinners, staff gifts, and travel still being charged to taxpayers?

  1. While you are sure that MCPS employees are having wild parties at the tax payers expense, please know that many employees who do have AMEX cards use them to SAVE tax players money.

Yes, that's right. Because MCPS AMEX cards are tied to specific accounts, such as instructional materials and textbook accounts, the cards can only be used to purchase such materials. Many vendors prefer, and offer discounts for using the AMEX cards over the longer, and more onerous process of a purchase order. All transactions have to be supported with itemized receipts showing that the purchase is appropriate.

As much as you you like to catch MCPS partying on the tax payers dime, it probably is not happening.

    1. Sorry 8:42 AM. It has already happened, and been documented over and over and over. You are a tad late to this party.
      But nice try.
Even the former President of the teacher's union has spoken about her 70 lunches at Il Pizzico.

  2. @Anonymous Feb 27, 8:42 AM, That is fine, that that is what is happening according to you. The point is, these are public taxpayers funds and the taxpayers have a right to know where their money is going. BOE is not a private company. MCPS is not a private company. The public school system is funded by public money from federal, state of MD, and local MoCo taxpayers. The elected BOE and elected county council are responsible for the finances. That is the law. We have an absolute right to know how our money is being spent. Other large school systems have 'checkbook online' so that the taxpayers can see where their money comes from and where it goes. And, as Janis points out, and you can read on the Parents' Coalition website and blog, the AmEx charges include lunches at Addie's and Il Pizzico. Our children are eating fried corn-fed chicken covered in fried corn, and the BOE and MCPS higher-ups are eating expensive, healthy, low-cal food at Il Pizzico.
