MCPS 2012 Graduation Rate for Students with Disabilities Shockingly Low

The following numbers refer to the Four Year Adjusted Cohort Rate. The 4-Year Adjusted Graduation Rate is calculated by dividing total Diplomas Earned by the 4-Year Adjusted Cohort. Students who drop out of high school remain in the adjusted cohort—that is, the denominator of the graduation rate calculation.

Students with disabilities who need special education services are entitled to a free appropriate public education until they either earn a regular high school diploma or "age out" at the end of the school year in which they turn 21 years old. In many MCPS schools, it appears that only about HALF of the special education students are receiving diplomas. What is happening to the other half? Do they drop out? Are they moved off the diploma track? Time for the "equity warrior" Starr to come up with an action plan for students with disabilities, to increase the numbers of them making it to a high school diploma!
