Video: MCPS is Off Limits for Candidates [teachers] of Color

Exclusive video of the Montgomery County Council and Board of Education breakfast meeting on September 30, 2014.  The two elected bodies met in a small conference room that does not provide more than 2 seats for the public and press. The meeting is not recorded and no minutes are taken. This video is the only record of this public meeting of these two elected bodies.

Around minute 40 is a discussion of diversity of MCPS teachers.
Minute 50 is the quote about MCPS being "off limits."

Topics discussed at the Montgomery County Council and Board of Education breakfast included School Resource Officers, Start Times, Pearson Curriculum 2.0, ESOL programs, White Flint development, School overcrowding, and PARCC.

  1. fabulous to get to see this meeting - - thanks so much for getting and posting it. Would love to not only see more such meetings being held, but more of them being available for the public to attend and/or (at least) view. Very Instructive - especially in this BOE election year! Thanks Parents Coalition!!

  2. Wow - the video is informative. Everyone should watch the part of the video beginning at about 50 minutes. My experience is exactly the opposite from that of Board Member Christopher Barclay. Teachers of color are actively recruited by MCPS. I believe the data would also show that there is a greater percentage of administrators of color than there are teachers of color. If there aren't enough teachers of color, it is because many have already been promoted into administrative positions. In addition, there are many opportunities for graduates of color outside of education today. Why go into a field in which teachers are belittled and required to teach to a script when there are high status jobs available in finance, law, and technology?
