 #CorsiRosenthalBox Key FAQs

Summarized from: https://cleanaircrew.org/box-fan-filters/

What is this box? A Corsi Rosenthal box, which is a DIY air filter for indoor spaces.

Is the filter box effective? Yes! Designed by experts on indoor air quality, this type of DIY air filter, when constructed correctly, performs as well as most HEPA filters (better in some lab tests!) but costs less. Depending on room size, the box may add about 3 air exchanges per hour without impacting existing HVAC systems. See: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/34040337/

Where should it be placed in the room? In the middle. Details.

When should I run it? Whenever there are people in the room.

What speed setting should the fan be on? Speed 1 (lowest) is sufficient. In testing, higher speeds were noisier & didn’t increase filtration significantly (per Jim Rosenthal).

Will the fan motor overheat? No. In all testing, fan temperature remained below acceptable thresholds, with similar results across different fan brands. Details.

Is it loud? If constructed correctly, no. It should be about 50 dBA, which is quieter than a fridge.

How often do the filters need to be changed? Usually every 6 months. Details

How do I dispose of the filters after that? Details.

Do other schools & congregate settings have these? Yes! School districts, student organizations, and community groups have made these for classrooms, workplaces, & other settings all over the world! See #CorsiRosenthalBox on social media for examples. And kids are involved! Check out this video by a 4th grader! https://youtu.be/H2YELPNsImk
