Blair Teacher has Courage to Speak Out

Congratulations to MCPS teacher Eric Walstein for once again speaking up on the current state of math education in Montgomery County Public Schools. For those of you who have not yet met Mr. Walstein, he is one of the jewels in the Blair Magnet program and the coach of the county wide math team. He is also one of those rare souls on the MCPS payroll who is not afraid to speak his mind, on math and many other subjects.

You can agree or disagree with Mr. Walstein - but read what he has to say about his experience in the classroom, and what he believes this means for the future of our school system. Here is a link to his piece in today's Post.

Thanks Mr. Walstein for sharing your views!

  1. It's interesting that he sees a problem with the over use of calculators. Calculators are one of the things the Board of Education refuses to supply as part of our students' free public education, but the purchases are mandated by local schools.

  2. Today at the County Council & MCPS Board of Education joint meeting lunch, Councilmember Knapp brought up this article. He wanted to know where the Board of Education was on this issue. Board of Education President Shirley Brandman responded,we "don't want to get too far into one teacher's perspective". She went on to state that a "multi-stakeholder group had been formed to address this".
