...Hoffpauir was particularly concerned that the intersection of Kingsview and Clopper roads, near the school, still requires pedestrians to cross while left-turning traffic is directed through the crosswalk. But school staff argued at the March hearing that the intersection is clearly marked and equipped with a countdown-timer that shows how long pedestrians have left to cross.http://www.gazette.net/article/20130423/NEWS/130429827/1022/school-board-denies-bus-route-appeal-in-germantown&template=gazette

Montgomery County pedestrian signalization still does not comply with the over-20-year old ADA law. ADA has 3-1/2 ft. per second; in Montgomery County, it is still 3 ft. per second.
ReplyDeleteIs that how many feet someone is assumed to travel per second when timing the lights for pedestrian crossings?
ReplyDeleteYes. Here is some text at http://guide.saferoutesinfo.org/engineering/traffic_signals.cfm#clear under 'Increase Pedestrian Clearance Intervals:' "The pedestrian clearance interval is the time remaining for pedestrians to cross the street once the flashing red hand indication is displayed on a pedestrian signal. The 2009 MUTCD requires this interval to be calculated based on a minimum walking speed of 3.5 feet per second."
ReplyDeleteMoCo still has 4 feet per second.

MCDOT has been retiming pedestrian signals. Are you certain that they have not retimed this one?
