Petition: Support naming the new Clarksburg middle school for Mrs. Hallie Wells

The Montgomery County Board of Education (BOE) has proposed four names for the new middle school in Clarksburg. Three of them are former members of the BOE and the other was the principal of Wootton High School in Rockville.
As an alternative, we ask for your support in naming the new school for Mrs. Hallie Wells.

Starr budget to delay Farquhar MS, Wheaton/Edison HS and Clarksburg/Damascus MS #2 capital projects

From Superintendent Joshua Starr's FY 2013 Capital Budget:

...In order to create a six-year CIP that balances our capital needs with the funding limitations of the county, it was necessary to delay the secondary modernization schedule, starting with William H. Farquhar Middle School and WheatonHigh School/Thomas Edison High School of Technology, by one year as well as delay an approved project, Clarksburg/Damascus Middle School #2, by one year. It is unfortunate that we must delay these projects and create further backlog of needs at a time when our enrollment continues to grow at a record pace, but the economic circumstances leave us with few options...

What The Washington Post said about the Parents' Coalition

The coalition might be the best-known parent advocacy group in the region. Its members represent several constituencies, including parents of special education and gifted education students and fiscal watchdogs. The group's defining victory came this school year when the school system scaled back the fees charged to families for course materials.

Coalition leaders have drawn attention to the misuse of funds collected from students for activities, the broadcast of a commercial radio service on school buses and, with their "Weast Watch" blog, the travel habits of Weast and his lieutenants.

The thing people accuse me of is listening, but not hearing. I hear, but I do not always agree. I am sorry that the world is faster than it was 10 years ago. I did not do that. [But] if we do not keep up, then our kids will be behind. We have to stop whining and get real."
