Congratulations to Tom Hearn! County puts athletic trainers in all schools

Years of advocacy at the local and state level by MCPS parent and Parents' Coalition member Tom Hearn have paid off!

MCPS has finally agreed to put athletic trainers in all schools.

Congratulations Tom and thank you for your extensive research and continued advocacy on this issue!

County puts athletic trainers in all schools

High school coaches within Montgomery County Public Schools no longer have to play doctor on the side. The county launched a pilot program for the 2014-15 school year that MCPS Athletics Specialist Jeff Sullivan said is an extension of last year’s addition of mandatory baseline concussion testing. All 25 high school athletic departments have their own nationally-certified trainer to help ensure student-athletes’ health and safety...

New Trend for High School Neighborhoods

Montgomery Blair HS in Silver Spring has always demonstrated its leadership among schools in Montgomery County.

What's the latest leadership trend?

Blair HS is so lucky to have a "HEAD FIRST" concussion care facility located right across University Boulevard from the school.

Now if your child plays football at Blair - no worries about whether an athletic trainer is onsite.  Your Head First concussion facility can take care of your child.

And, its not only the football team kids who may find themselves at Head First.  You never know what other challenges face your child at Blair.  This surely beats the emergency room at Holy Cross Hospital for convenience!

Way to go Blair!

Athletic trainers missing in most Md. high schools

COLLEGE PARK —- Just four of Maryland’s 24 public school districts have athletic trainers working full-time with student athletes in all high schools, recent calls conducted by Capital News Service reveal.
That means thousands of student athletes throughout the state are participating in practices and games without a licensed health care professional on hand for emergency medical situations. The Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association estimates there are almost 114,000 student-athletes from 199 public schools participating in roughly 24 sports every year.
It’s a case of the “haves and have nots,” said Gina Palermo, Howard County athletic trainer and chairwoman of the Secondary Schools Athletic Trainer Committee of the Maryland Athletic Trainers Association. “You’re saying that this group is OK [for public school districts to spend money on], but this group isn’t,” she said.
Anne Arundel, Caroline, Somerset and Worcester counties have full-time athletic trainers in all high schools for the 2013-2014 school year.

Breaking News: Starr puts Athletic Trainer at Whitman HS, but not Gaithersburg HS.

Another secret decision by Superintendent Joshua Starr.
In July, Superintendent Starr slipped out a memo that stated that Athletic Trainers were being put at "certain" schools for the 2013-2014 school year.  Did parents know that Athletic Trainers were even a possibility?  No.

Yet, here's the list of Superintendent Starr's surprise appointments of Athletic Trainers.  Did your high school get one?  Superintendent Starr's kids are in the Whitman Cluster.  Whitman HS got an Athletic Trainer.

MCPS Surplus Could Be Used to Fund Athletic Trainers at High Schools

April 8, 2013: Superintendent Starr at a Community Day at Walter Johnson High School.  At that event, Tom Hearn asked Superintendent Starr the following question:
