Reports of gun, medical emergency led to lockdown, shelter-in-place at Kennedy High

A lockdown after reports of a student with a gun and a shelter-in-place due to a medical emergency Thursday at John F. Kennedy High School are highlighting ongoing safety issues in the Silver Spring school, according to PTA President Ricky Ribeiro.

Principal Vickie Adamson sent a community letter sent to the Kennedy High community Thursday, saying students notified security staff at the end of fifth period that “a student may be in the possession of a gun.” According to the school’s bell schedule, fifth period ends at 12:48 p.m. School staff called 911, and the school went into a lockdown at 1:01 p.m., according to the letter.

According to police radio transmissions, Adamson called 911 at 12:56 p.m. after several students reported that they saw a student with a gun in his waistband...

...“These incidents are the culmination of what I have been complaining and advocating about for years,” Ribeiro said. “[There] has been a security problem at the school.”..

FINALLY — @MCPS met with the community to discuss what occurred @MagruderHS on January 21. Honestly, I can’t imagine the school staff handling it better, but finally, the details emerged!! My favorite parts… 1/
@mentionsapologized. In my 10 years as an advocate, tonight marks the second time I’ve heard leaders admit publicly mistakes were made. That was important. 2/
No one expects a crisis to go perfectly. But when @MCPS glosses over the missteps, it doesn’t honor the experience. I appreciated @MCPS acknowledging there were folks that shouldn’t have been allowed to access the building. WE WERE IN LOCKDOWN!!! 3/
They didn’t name names, but @McCarthyMoCo confused our community by walking across the campus and entering the building. Lockdown is lockdown. Curious elected officials should have been locked out. (Sorry) 4/
And, @MCPS made clear they learned their lesson — reunification THEN press conference. That was NONSENSE holding our kids while McKnight and @mcpnews 5/
I doubt we will see another community required to wait 10 months before @MCPS meets with them. So that’s good. That’s what advocates want — to see progress!! If @MCPSSafety issues a new After Action without community input, we’ll return to @mocoboe6/
And, when @MCPS requires the Chief to apologize to the advocates in the same public forum she used to discredit us, then we’ll really know the integrity has returned to @mocoboe7/7

Gazette: Montgomery County schools face tougher emergency drill rules

...Following the revision of emergency plan guidelines for Maryland schools in April 2013, the Maryland State Board of Education amended state regulations later in the year in part to add a requirement that schools must conduct drills for evacuation, “shelter in place,” reverse evacuation, lockdown, severe weather and “drop, cover, and hold.”
The state expanded the types of drills local school districts and schools must perform to help them prepare for “a broader range of emergencies,” according to a May 21, 2013, letter from state Superintendent Lillian M. Lowery to members of the Maryland school board...
