Interim Prince George's schools superintendent [Shawn Joseph] left controversy in Nashville schools
...Joseph will take over as a national search for the next superintendent is conducted. His tenure as the leader of the Nashville school system was mired in controversy and he eventually agreed to leave.
His contract in Nashville was bought out. According to media reports, Joseph was criticized for not properly handling multiple sexual harassment complaints made not against him but against other employees, and for securing no-bid contracts.
Some of those who filed sexual harassment complaints sued for hundreds of thousands of dollars. Joseph resisted calls for him to resign in December 2018.
Nashville board members spoke for and against Joseph at a meeting in April 2019, where his separation agreement was announced...

When Monique Felder took a position with the Nashville public schools it was to go to work for someone that she had worked with before.
Monique Felder moved to Nashville to work for Shawn Joseph. Shawn Joseph was the new superintendent of Nashville Metro Schools.
Shawn Joseph was being mentored in that position by former MCPS Superintendent Jerry Weast.
...But Joseph recently told NewsChannel 5 Investigates, "I feel real good about who we have."
He defended the fact that, when he wanted the best chief academic officer in the country, he hired a longtime colleague from Maryland, Monique Felder.
The best chief of schools he could find: another colleague, Sito Narcisse.
The best executive officer for diversity: Narcisse's then-fiance, now wife, Maritza Gonzalez.
The best executive officer for priority schools: another colleague, Mo Carrasco.
Two other executive lead principals -- Karen Desouza Gallman and Linda Iverson -- are also from Maryland.
"If I know extraordinary people," Joseph said, "then I think it's great for me to do what I can do to recruit them."..
...Meanwhile, we obtained an email in which Doctor Joseph's longtime mentor cautioned him about hiring so many outsiders.
That came after Joseph hired an outsider as his chief of staff. That meant that three of the four people on his leadership team were from out of state. The only Metro Schools veteran was former interim director Chris Henson.
"Chief looks good and well rounded. BUT she is another outsider," Joseph's former boss, Jerry Weast cautioned...

Hazard, Young and Attea has been the search for for the Board of Education since at least 1999.
Former Montgomery County Public Schools Superintendent Jack R. Smith now works for Hazard, Young, and Attea as a consultant.
From Smith's bio:
...He then served as Superintendent of Montgomery County Public Schools in Maryland for the next five years, overseeing a multi-billion-dollar budget, and guiding the school system through the COVID-19 pandemic as well as other complex and difficult situations. Additionally, he worked with staff to develop the Be Well 365 system to support student well being. Nashville reaches tentative harassment settlement of $1.2M with former public school administrator (Also Former MCPS Administrator - Moreno Carrasco)
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — Lawyers for Metro Nashville Public Schools have reached a proposed settlement of a $1.2 million sexual harassment lawsuit filed by a former district administrator.
Terms of the final settlement with Dr. Vanessa Garcia have not been made public. That deal still must be approved by the Metro School Board, according to Metro deputy law director Mike Safley.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — Lawyers for Metro Nashville Public Schools have reached a proposed settlement of a $1.2 million sexual harassment lawsuit filed by a former district administrator.
Terms of the final settlement with Dr. Vanessa Garcia have not been made public. That deal still must be approved by the Metro School Board, according to Metro deputy law director Mike Safley.
The proposed settlement, disclosed in a new court filing Monday, came less than three weeks after U.S. District Judge William L. Campbell Jr. rejected numerous efforts by the school district's lawyers to throw out various claims made by Garcia.
Garcia's lawsuit accuses former Metro Schools administrator Mo Carrasco of grossly inappropriate sexual comments, as well as one occasion when he allegedly put his hand on her breast at a district Christmas party.
After Garcia filed a formal complaint back in November 2017, other witnesses came forward - and Carrasco resigned. In May 2018, Garcia herself lost her job as part of a so-called "realignment."...
