From "Zero" to ... MCPS

Gilbert Arenas has certainly been in the news lately.

But did you know that his "Zero Two Hero Foundation" has donated thousands and thousands of dollars to Montgomery County Public Schools?

Below is a partial listing of MCPS schools that have been beneficiaries of his largesse, along with the amount donated.

Loiederman MS $2100
Sligo Creek ES $4500
Page ES $ 3300
Burnt Mills ES $3900
Argyle MS $3900
Wheaton HS $3450
Westbrook ES $3300
Montgomery Blair HS $4350
Potomac ES $3900
Emory Grove Center $4800
Ashburton ES $2850
Paint Branch HS $4200
Arcola ES $4350
Takoma Park MS $3150
Glenallan ES $3600
Fleet Street Alternative $3450
Bells Mill ES $3750
Redland MS $5100
Broad Acres ES $4050
Oakland Terrace ES $1650
Georgian Forest ES $4050
Forest Oak MS $4200

Of course, donations in those amounts raises a few questions:
  1. Were these monies deposited into the schools' Independent Activity Funds?
  2. Who decided how these generous donations should be spent? The principals? The PTA?
  3. Has the donation program continued this season? Have any schools received donations this season?
  4. What does the Board of Education think about different schools receiving different "windfall" amounts? Is it "equitable" that Oakland Terrace ES receive $1650 while Arcola ES receives $4350?
  5. Do these donations need to be put before the County Council for "appropriation?"

Just asking.
