To date the MCPS Board of Education has not uttered a peep about closing Monocacy Elementary School. Can Superintendent Weast simply command the Board of Education to follow his artificial timeline for closing a school? In 1985 the MCPS Board of Education initiated a process that ultimately resulted in the closure of Woodward High School. From start to finish, the closing of Woodward High School was a 2 1/2 year process. Monocacy Elementary School? Superintendent Weast wants that closed in 5 months.
Mr. Weast is arrogant. Period.
ReplyDeleteOur family is outraged, saddened and crushed
ReplyDeleteby this proposal to close Monocacy Elementary...this is OUR school in the country! We live here in the agricultural reserve because of this wonderful rural school and close-knit community!
What a travesty it would be to loose yet another rural school and cluster together these communities!

Jerry Weast's reasons for closing down Monocacy don't hold water. He says Monocacy student body numbers are too low and that the county needs the money it would save from its closure. In fact, Monocacy is at 86 percent capacity and his plan will cost the county much more than leaving Monocacy open would.
ReplyDeleteClosing it down and moving Monocacy children to Poolesville will mean overcrowding there and the need for at least $14 million in additions to accommodate all students. In the meantime children will be in trailers. Weast claims closing Monocacy will save $1 million and that's why it's necessary. How does saving $1 million but spending $14 million 10 miles down the road result in savings for Montgomery County?
This thing just doesn't make sense. I think an audit is in order.
