BOE proposes to continue excluding home schooled students from extracurricular activities

From the proposed 2010 Legislative Platform (last page):

Home Schooling

Maryland law recognizes home instruction as an alternative to public school enrollment and as a means for students to receive regular, thorough instruction. Currently, home school students are expressly authorized to participate in public school standardized testing.

The Montgomery County Board of Education opposes:
  • Any requirement that home school students be allowed to participate in public school athletics or other extracurricular activities.

Anyone know the rationale behind the BOE's opposition to allowing home schooled students to participate in public school athletics and other extracurricular activities?  Does anyone really benefit from this policy?

  1. Tim Tebow, of the UFla Gators, was a homeschool student who played in high school, I understand.

Guess U of MD football team thinks they have enough quality talent on their team, thank you very much, and it is just fine to exclude qualified kids from playing on public school teams that their parents pay taxes to support....
