MCPS Food: $1.6 Million Deficit in FY10; $800K Deficit projected for FY11

On September 12, 2011, the Montgomery County Council Education Committee will hold a hearing on the report shown below on MCPS Food Services. The 2 PM hearing will be televised live.

  1. Here’s one more case where the County/School System is discussing a strategy to improve without stopping to ask its “consumers” what’s wrong? The researchers should have surveyed the students and their parents to get a clearer picture of what kids are currently doing for meals and snacks. If they are not choosing school lunches and other preferred foods then the researchers should have asked them why not. I suspect that even with a new strategy many students, especially busy high schoolers, will continue to choose speed and convenience over quality. BTW: On most school days my kid, like so many others, skips the very long cafeteria lines and gets both speed and quality by bringing a lunch from home.

  2. Most high schools have 1 lunch for 1,900 students. What cafeteria could handle that many students at once?
