Brilliant. Seems to me MCPS needs to get an education! They clearly do not understand how things work. Wireless access points emit ALL THE TIME. Will teachers realize they are putting their pregnancies at risk?
Pregnancies are at risk? I think you need an education.
The "radiation" in question has less energy than visible light, so I'd be fascinated to hear why pregnancies or anything else is much at risk from exposure to this "radiation". If we were talking about x-rays or gamma rays, also "radiation" but far higher in energy than visible light, I'd say you were right, there's a public health problem.
The problem here is people here the word "radiation" and they go nuts. Radio waves, microwaves, infrared light, visible light, ultraviolet light, x-rays, and gamma rays are all forms of light, with the last two being the only two that have any appreciable health risks that we understand. Standing under a microwave repeater in a school, all day long for 365 days isn't going to do a darn thing to anyone. This is right up there with the "health risks" of living under electrical power lines, which surely are emitting all sorts of "radiation" - there are none, you don't find mutant plants living under those power lines, you don't find "dead" zones, but people will something that they don't understand into a "health risk" because there's no evidence to support that it isn't a health risk - of course there's no evidence to support that it is, but why let that sort of logic get in the way?
Well, good. MCEA is more than happy to offer up their members as experiments. It's teachers that are going to be under the 200 device routers that Sherwin Collette bought (RFP? Bids?) all day long, every school day. Let's see how that exposure works out for pregnant teachers.
Dear Anon 4:23 AM it seems that you stay up at night worrying about "radiation." Your qualitative essay needs qualitative substance in order to be convincing. Perhaps you can volunteer your time in front of a Wi-Fi antenna in order to gather empirical data for the sake of scientific discovery.
I think anonymous posting at 4:23 needs an education. read what scientists who dedicate their lives to this research have to say abut the dangers to pregnant women though I'm not sure research from Dr. Hugh Taylor, Chair of the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences at Yale University School of Medicine will be good enough for you: http://www.babysafeproject.org/ research shows non-ionizing radiation causing cells damage - maybe you should spend some time getting caught up. the FCC guidelines haven't caught up with the science. France passed a law banning WiFi in schools for very young children, the AAP is urging the FCC to revise guidelines to safeguard children and pregnant women...
To Anon 4:23 AM: “I often say that when you can measure what you are speaking about, and express it in numbers, you know something about it; but when you cannot measure it, when you cannot express it in numbers, your knowledge is of a meager and unsatisfactory kind; it may be the beginning of knowledge, but you have scarcely in your thoughts advanced to the state of Science, whatever the matter may be.” Lord Kelvin, 1883
It's MCPS math! A classroom of 25 students needs a wifi router for 200 devices!
Yes, you read that correctly. MCPS is paying for and installing routers in each classroom that can handle 200 devices. Do you think MCPS is overpaying for these routers? Oh, but think of the perks that come with this purchase.
Teachers who are pregnant are possibly risking the health of their babies from the radiation found in classrooms in Montgomery County. It would be wise for people to take a little time and read the research in order to understand why so many doctors are concerned. In fact over 100 doctors have signed on to the Baby Aafe project which recommends that pregnant women reduce time and Wi-Fi hotspots.
They have issued these recommendations because of multiple research studies showing prenatal exposure results in brain damage to the fetus. Before you discount these statements please review the following documents: FCC Submission by Dr. Kaplan http://apps.fcc.gov/ecfs/comment/view?id=6017465635

Research on wireless and genetic damage Dasdag S, Akdag MZ, Erdal ME, Erdal N, Ay OI, Ay ME, Yilmaz SG, Tasdelen B, Yegin K. Effects Of 2.4 Ghz Radiofrequency Radiation Emitted From Wi-Fi Equipment On microRna Expression In Brain Tissue. Int J Radiat Biol. 2015 Mar 16:1-26. The significant effects on microRNAs observed in this study were found from Wi-Fi exposure that was well below the legal limit. "We found that miR-106b-5p and miR-107 expression decreased 3.6 and 3.3 times in the exposure group, respectively. Therefore, we state that 2.4 GHz RF radiation emitted from wireless equipment may be associated with prognoses of some brain diseases because of the relation between some diseases and alteration in miR-106b-5p and miR-107 expression." CONCLUSION: Long term exposure of 2.4 GHz RF may lead to adverse effects such as neurodegenerative diseases originated from the alteration of some miRNAs expression.
Why is it that virtually all administrators of schools and school boards are so god damn stupid that they would consider "keeping up with innovation..." over the heath of children. I am so sick of this stupidity it is almost not worth saving this world for idiots like this. The tragedy is that these people are not fit to have our children in their care. Do they understand that there are over 20,000 studies that confirm harm from this technology??????? We are all thrown into a self defense mode by people who are troglobites, mutants, idiots, imbeciles. To quote the words of DR. George Carlo, the scientist who did the first study for Motorola that showed cancer, "A child in a classroom who is forcibly irradiated with wi fi is essentially experiencing assault and battery." The results of Carlo's study was then suppressed by the head of the CTIA (Celluliar Telephone Industry Agency) who happens to be the current head of the FCC, Tom Wheeler. Do you idiots think that the multi trillion dollar industry that owns the government wants this information to be made public??? Have you seen how our "government" works ??? Follow the money. The FCC standards are fraudulent and are 100x's less than those in Russia !!!!!!!!! You people are liable for the death and mayhem that will follow years of chronic irradiation. Why do you think that you have any knowledge to refute the concerns of the parents??? Jesus Christ. Wake up people
This is all new to me. How does this effect students who live on university campuses? Both my niece and nephew attend universities that have wireless dorms as well as every building on campus. Everything on their campuses is wired. Is this cause for worry? I have never given it any thought.
And that's the flawed MCPS logic. First, developing bodies are different than adult bodies. MCPS is experimenting with exposing children to high powered wifi and chromebook radiation. Let's see how that works out.
The rest of the country is not impressed with the MCPS crumb rubber experiment.
Second, when Joshua Starr bought the chromebooks without Board of Education discussion he claimed they were "needed" for PARCC exams. However, they are now in use all day long, every day, in every subject. That's a big difference from putting children in front of screens for a week or two every school year.
MCPS now builds very small classrooms, puts a huge Promethean screen on one wall, and hands each child their own personal screen. Event the teachers are walking around with their cell phones in their hands while they teach.
And yet, employers complain that MCPS graduates do not know how to disengage from the internet, even during interviews. Wonder why that is?
of course you should worry. they are in a mutagenic, carcinogenic, neurotoxic, genotoxic agent that affects all organs and all systems of the body. my daughter is nearing college and I am sick with worry. all one has to do is to look at some science. check out the bioinitiative report. we are in deep and it won't change until the bodies start piling up. i have heard that telecom execs and others of that monied ilk have their cars protected from radiation from the ambient environment. i also heard that obama's kids go to a school with no wifi
Note that the radiation from chromebooks is higher than from just the router alone.
So this is what MCPS students look like today. They are starting out in elementary school staring at screens all day. They are not just using chromebooks for PARCC exams, they are using them every day, in all classes.
Brilliant. Seems to me MCPS needs to get an education! They clearly do not understand how things work. Wireless access points emit ALL THE TIME.
