Jack R. Smith Now Works for Same Search Firm Handling @mocoboe Superintendent Search #SmallWorld

Whenever the Montgomery County Board of Education needs a new superintendent they hire the same search firm.

Hazard, Young and Attea has been the search for for the Board of Education since at least 1999.

Former Montgomery County Public Schools Superintendent Jack R. Smith now works for Hazard, Young, and Attea as a consultant.

From Smith's bio

...He then served as Superintendent of Montgomery County Public Schools in Maryland for the next five years, overseeing a multi-billion-dollar budget, and guiding the school system through the COVID-19 pandemic as well as other complex and difficult situations. Additionally, he worked with staff to develop the Be Well 365 system to support student well being. He also designed and implemented an equity and achievement framework to increase access and opportunity and support learning for historically underserved populations...

These Doctors Wanted to Get Schools Back to Normal. Their Botched Effort May Backfire.

The first rule of science: Check your facts before publishing.

...The pedigree of the physicians in the group is impressive, too. Several hold positions at the University of California-San Francisco School of Medicine. Others are affiliated with prestigious children’s hospitals. Despite these sterling credentials, when several scientists dug into the toolkit’s sourcing shortly after it launched, they found major inconsistencies and errors. Most glaringly, the doctors claimed that child suicides had increased dramatically during the pandemic—which was false. (They have since edited that slide to reflect more accurate data.) Among the other misrepresentations and poorly supported arguments, the group made an unfair comparison of Covid and flu death rates in kids, misinterpreted the conclusions of a meta-analysis of the prevalence of long Covid in children, and blamed school closures alone (ignoring the effects of the pandemic itself) on kids’ mental health problems...

4 More Schools Go Virtual as Omicron Variant Continues to Spread

Four more Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) will revert to virtual learning for 10 days as the omicron variant continues to spread.

Loiederman Middle School, Harmony Hills, Pine Crest and Wheaton Woods elementary schools and the autism program at Westover Elementary School temporarily will cease in-school classes as of Jan. 31. They are expected to reopen their doors Feb. 10, according to an MCPS Community Message issued Thursday evening...

Breaking: During Magruder HS Lockdown Board of Education was Hiding at College Park Luxury Hotel. @mcps @mocoboe

On Friday, January 21, 2022, Magruder High School students and staff were confined to classrooms for an emergency lockdown that lasted 5 1/2 hours.

During the 5 1/2 hour lockdown, Montgomery County Board of Education members did not appear at Magruder High School or at the press conference held at the elementary school next door. The Board of Education didn't even issue a statement.

Where were the Board of Education members on January 21st?  Keep in mind that the Superintendent is the Board of Education's secretary, treasurer, and included in their meetings.

Board of Education members and staff were in hiding at a luxury hotel in College Park.

An alert citizen snapped a picture of the sign board in the lobby of the luxury hotel announcing the Board of Education's retreat.  The Parents' Coalition has since confirmed that the Board of Education was at the luxury hotel on that date.

A retreat of the Board of Education is an open meetings under the Maryland Open Meetings Act, but this retreat was not shown on the Board of Education's calendar

The Parents' Coalition has filed an Open Meetings Act Complaint with the Maryland Open Meetings Act Compliance Board regarding this undisclosed, off site meeting.

We look forward to learning what Board of Education members were doing all day at this luxury hotel that prevented them from engaging in any way, shape or form with the ongoing emergency situation at Magruder High School.

#CorsiRosenthalBox Key FAQs @mcps @mocoboe #COVIDisAirborne #Ventilation

 #CorsiRosenthalBox Key FAQs

Summarized from: https://cleanaircrew.org/box-fan-filters/

What is this box? A Corsi Rosenthal box, which is a DIY air filter for indoor spaces.

Is the filter box effective? Yes! Designed by experts on indoor air quality, this type of DIY air filter, when constructed correctly, performs as well as most HEPA filters (better in some lab tests!) but costs less. Depending on room size, the box may add about 3 air exchanges per hour without impacting existing HVAC systems. See: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/34040337/

Where should it be placed in the room? In the middle. Details.

When should I run it? Whenever there are people in the room.

What speed setting should the fan be on? Speed 1 (lowest) is sufficient. In testing, higher speeds were noisier & didn’t increase filtration significantly (per Jim Rosenthal).

Will the fan motor overheat? No. In all testing, fan temperature remained below acceptable thresholds, with similar results across different fan brands. Details.

Is it loud? If constructed correctly, no. It should be about 50 dBA, which is quieter than a fridge.

How often do the filters need to be changed? Usually every 6 months. Details

How do I dispose of the filters after that? Details.

Do other schools & congregate settings have these? Yes! School districts, student organizations, and community groups have made these for classrooms, workplaces, & other settings all over the world! See #CorsiRosenthalBox on social media for examples. And kids are involved! Check out this video by a 4th grader! https://youtu.be/H2YELPNsImk

Can I make more? Absolutely! See plans & more at https://edgecollective.io/airbox/

Police: School Shooting Suspect had Ghost Gun Parts ‘Literally Delivered to His Home

The 17-year-old Magruder High School student charged with shooting another student in a school bathroom had ghost gun parts delivered to his home, Montgomery County Police Department (MCPD) Chief Marcus Jones said during a press conference Monday.

“Three different parts were literally delivered to his home residence,” Jones said at police headquarters in Gaithersburg. He said the suspect purchased the ghost gun himself...

The Blake Beat: "I’ve always wanted to live out a dystopian fiction plotline. A huge health crisis going on globally, schools only caring about politics and not the safety of their community, spending my time always being worried about dying instead of normal teenage activities."

I love it at school right now.

Nothing like walking into the hallways and breathing in a thick scent of dread and fear. Smells great, really. Some people are even pulling down their masks to get a nice whiff. Who could blame them?

We even get breaks from our teachers all the time! Isn’t that great? I mean, nobody likes their teacher, the person they’re plenty used to getting instruction from at this point in the year. It’s MUCH better to get a change of pace of teachers, especially burnt out teachers that need to be using the time to plan for their other classes or tend to the students who are stuck at home.

I get to go through my classes, nice and exhausted, and retain not a single word that was said. Doing my assignments by stumbling through them is so much better than actually trying. No stress about getting right or wrong answers if you BSed the whole thing. Really taking advantage of in-person learning, because students can REALLY get the benefits of in-person instruction. I’m definitely learning better than I ever would at home...

WUSA9: 'Took a piece of my soul' | Mom wants answers after teen son found dead in Montgomery County

GERMANTOWN, Md. — Montgomery County Police detectives are investigating the death of a teenager, whose body was found Monday around 3 p.m. near a community of homes in the 18900 block of Grotto Lane in Germantown.

The Major Crimes Division is currently investigating his death as a homicide.

Montgomery County Public Schools confirmed the 17-year-old victim is Jailyn Jones who was a 12th grader at Northwest High School...

Maryland covid deaths have hit a monthly record amid omicron

Covid-19 deaths are mounting in Maryland even as new infections decline.

With nearly a week left in January, the state on Tuesday already had logged 1,475 covid-related fatalities, more than double the number recorded in December, and higher than any other month since the pandemic began.

Public health experts say death rates tend to lag weeks after patients receive positive test results and symptoms worsen, which explains why fatalities can spike as infection rates have fallen across D.C., Maryland and Virginia for more than a week. Officials add that it can take weeks to retroactively verify death certificates, which can change fatality numbers slightly over time.

Eric Toner, a senior scientist at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, said Maryland’s peak in deaths could “come and go” as quickly as the omicron surge in cases has, but urged residents and elected officials to exercise caution...

Why most of us should be wearing N95 masks

N95 respirators have long been the best disposable face coverings for protection against airborne viruses, but until recently, they were scarce.

When worn properly, N95s can filter out at least 95 percent of particles in the air, including the virus that causes covid-19. Only pricey air-purifying respirators or hazmat suits offer better protection...

NEW: Police sources say the 17yo found murdered in Germantown yesterday afternoon was a 12th grader at Northwest High School.

Other students who witnessed the shooting didn’t alert school officials or call 911, Jones said.

The Montgomery County teenager charged with critically wounding a classmate with an untraceable ghost gun told authorities he purchased the components online and a friend helped him assemble the weapon, a prosecutor said in court Monday.

“Three different parts were literally delivered to his home,” Montgomery County Police Chief Marcus Jones added at a news conference after the hearing.

The details of the Friday shooting that put Magruder High School in lockdown emerged as Steven Alston Jr., 17, was ordered held without bond pending trial.

The 15-year-old victim “is currently fighting for his life" at a local hospital, said Carlotta Woodward,a prosecutor in the Montgomery County State’s Attorney’s Office...

Tues. Jan. 25th: @mococouncil Votes to Speed Process for Cell Towers in Front Yards AND Lower Fees for Vendors

Dear neighbor,

Tomorrow afternoon (Tuesday, January 25) the County Council is scheduled to vote on two resolutions to:
  1. Speed conditional use hearings  (by restricting resident rights)  for wireless facilities that will be placed very near to homes  and
  2. Lower fees for these applications so as to massively subsidize wireless expansion - at resident/taxpayer expense.
The Council is poised to approve and encourage close proximity wireless antennas in spite of the recent DC Court of Appeals decision (EHT vs FCC) that the FCC has yet to provide a “reasoned explanation” to demonstrate current radio frequency (RF) emission standards are safe.

We need your help TODAY to reach out to the County Council to STOP these onerous resolutions!

MC4T.ORG is working with a broad coalition of Montgomery County organizations that are opposed to these resolutions. Resolutions that are intended to  implement some of the most onerous provisions of ZTA 19-07.

Please use this link to take action and send emails to all Council Members urging that they reject both resolutions.

(The link includes lots more information and a special one-minute tool to make it very easy to contact the Council.)

Please take action today!

And, as always thank you so much for your support!

Magruder H.S. principal apologizes after telling community there was 'no immediate threat'

Magruder High School's principal has apologized after sending an email saying there was "no immediate threat to the safety of staff or students" following a shooting that left a male student with critical injuries.

At 12:53 p.m. Friday, school security staff became aware of a situation in a bathroom, Montgomery County Police Chief Marcus Jones confirmed during an evening press conference. After determining the student had been shot, the school called 911 at 12:57 p.m. Magruder went into "a full lockdown" at 1:05 p.m., per Jones.

"Any [community engagement officers] on the air available to respond to Magruder High School?" a dispatcher said on the sixth district police channel at 1:03 p.m.

Magruder High School student charged as adult with attempted second-degree murder

A 17-year-old accused of shooting a fellow Magruder High School student was charged as an adult with attempted second-murder as the victim’s listed condition worsened to critical, Montgomery County police officials said Saturday.

The suspect, Steven Alston Jr., was being held without bond and is expected to appear in court Monday. Police believe he was armed with a “ghost gun,” a weapon assembled from different parts. High School Student Being Held Without Bond Following School Shooting

For Immediate Release: Saturday, January 22, 2022

Gaithersburg, MD - A 17-year-old Magruder High School Student is in custody following a shooting at the school on Friday, January 21, 2022.

At approximately 1 p.m., Montgomery County Police were called to the high school located on Muncaster Mill Road in Rockville, when a 15-year-old male student was discovered inside a student bathroom by school security with a gunshot wound. Montgomery County Fire Rescue responded to the school and provided medical assistance to the student, who was transported to an area hospital in serious condition.

The school went into a full lockdown at 1:05 p.m. and the building was secured. The Montgomery County Sheriff’s department, along with SWAT, assisted patrol in securing and searching the building. MCPD detectives worked simultaneously to investigate leads and identified a suspect.

The suspect, Steven Alston Jr., an 11th grade Magruder student, was located inside a classroom and taken into custody shortly after 3 p.m. A privately manufactured firearm (ghost gun) was found inside the school, which is believed to be the gun used by Alston, Jr.

During the course of the investigation, detectives determined that the incident involved Alston, Jr. and the victim, a 10th grade Magruder student. There is no evidence to suggest that the Alston, Jr. was targeting anyone else within the school.

Steven Alston Jr. has been charged with Attempted 2nd Degree Murder, 1st Degree Assault, Use of a Firearm in the Commission of a Felony/Violent Crime, Possession of a Dangerous Weapon on School Property and Possession of a Firearm by a Minor. He is being charged as an adult. This is an active and ongoing investigation.

The victim is in an area hospital and listed in critical condition. Alston Jr. is being held without bond.

MCCPTA President and others accused of "back-door politics to publicly discredit" Monifa McKnight. @mcps @mocoboe @MCC_PTA @tomhucker @Lynne4Students @JMartinMCEA @MCAAPMD

 January 18, 2022

Open Letter to the Montgomery County Board of Education:

It has been just over a week since the passing of Dr. Lani Guinier, the heralded African American female attorney whose innovative and provocative writings on racial justice and voting rights were used to undermine her nomination to lead the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division. Today, we are witnessing a similar political attempt to destroy another professionally qualified woman of color, Dr. Monifa McKnight. She is being strategically and unjustly vilified during her candidacy to be the next Montgomery County Public Schools Superintendent. We will not stand by and watch this happen again.

We wish to call attention to the uneven and unfair treatment of Interim Superintendent Dr. Monifa McKnight, who answered the call to leadership amid the COVID-19 pandemic that has confounded governmental and private sector leaders to say nothing of school officials across the country. Constituent criticism is to be expected by any leader, but the potshots being taken against Dr. McKnight, by politicians who know all-to-well the complexities of balancing safety with public services, suggest an untoward motive at play. We are particularly aghast at leaders who purport themselves to represent marginalized communities of color and women taking part in these bad faith practices.

The strategic and coordinated attack of some elected officials and affinity groups suggests an ulterior motive to negatively influence the selection of the next superintendent of schools. Interim Superintendent Dr. McKnight has the credentials, experience, and in-depth knowledge to compete for the position of Superintendent without internal and external influences that appear to be compromising the selection process.

Specifically, the presidents of the Montgomery County Parent Teacher Association, Montgomery County Education Association, and the Montgomery County Association of Administrators and Principals, Council Member Tom Hucker, Board of Education Member Lynne Harris, and County Executive Marc Elrich appear to be engaging in back-door politics to publicly discredit the Interim Superintendent. We recognize this is an election year and that people join forces for self-interest, but there is never an acceptable time to target one individual for political gain. We demand that these persons and others stand down from further combative actions.

The Board of Education members have a responsibility to model fairness and integrity for our children and students who are watching, the staff who are seeking direction, and the community that expects the core values of the school system to be carried out by its leadership. We recognize the difficulty in selecting a leader of such a large and diverse region and pray for the wisdom and fortitude of those tasked with making a decision that will impact so many families.

We are resolute for a fully fair and just process that charts a way forward for all of Montgomery County, not merely the areas of privilege. Not only do we urge that Dr. McKnight’s candidacy is not tarnished in the eyes of the Board of Education, but that those who have acted in an unjust manner are held accountable. As leaders within this community, we believe it is our burden of responsibility to call out injustice, particularly in the wake of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s Holiday who famously said, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.”
