Sounding the Alarm: DC schools fail to prep for shootings, fire, other emergencies

WASHINGTON (7News) — School emergency plans outline how students and staff should prepare for unlikely catastrophes including fire, extreme weather and school shootings. Yet, according to D.C. Public Schools' records reviewed by 7News, a significant number of schools are not prepared for these emergencies. Most schools did not have approved safety plans until 2020, while others skipped required safety drills.

According to DCPS records, fewer than half of its schools practiced 10 annual fire drills every year since 2017 as required by the fire code. Forty-three percent of D.C.’s public schools failed to do two required lockdown drills each year since 2017...
