Why did the Board of Education Spend $9,773 at the BWI Hilton in 1 Week Last Summer?

The Parents' Coalition has obtained Board of Education expense account records for calendar year 2017 through March 15, 2018.

Included in the documents we received are copies of the Board of Education's JP Morgan Chase credit card bills.

The July 31, 2017, Board of Education credit card bill shows three charges under the category of Travel activity from "Hilton Baltimore BWI" on three days in July with arrival dates of July 4, July 9 and July 11. The total for these three transactions is $9,773.19.

What were these credit card transactions for?

How many backpacks do MCPS students need?

The MCPS side foundation has already purchased 40,000 backpacks for students for August, yet here is a charity also collecting backpacks.

Are this many backpacks needed, or is this just a way to fund raise?

What The Washington Post said about the Parents' Coalition

The coalition might be the best-known parent advocacy group in the region. Its members represent several constituencies, including parents of special education and gifted education students and fiscal watchdogs. The group's defining victory came this school year when the school system scaled back the fees charged to families for course materials.

Coalition leaders have drawn attention to the misuse of funds collected from students for activities, the broadcast of a commercial radio service on school buses and, with their "Weast Watch" blog, the travel habits of Weast and his lieutenants.
