MCPS Still Striving to Fill Hundreds of Vacant Positions

There are 393 teacher and 422 support staff positions unfilled at Montgomery County Public Schools as of July 7. One third of the open slots are special education positions, according to Christopher Cram, director of communications for MCPS.

The district is actively seeking new hires and is both hosting and visiting job fairs throughout the country and in Puerto Rico, Cram said. MCPS also is visiting colleges and holding virtual hiring sessions, he added.

Teachers have been resigning throughout the school year. A total of 1,070 resigned since the opening of schools in September of 2021. During the previous school year, 775 teachers resigned throughout the school year...

Albornoz ‘Deeply Alarmed’ About Lack of Staffing MCPS Faces Next School Year

Montgomery County Education Association (MCEA) President Jennifer Martin testified in April at a Montgomery County Council budget hearing that 1,443 Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) employees gave notice that they plan to resign or retire.

Council President Gabe Albornoz told MyMCM that the council is “deeply alarmed and will assured the council is supporting MCPS in their recruitment efforts”...

MCPS Faces Teacher Shortage for Next School Year

As the Montgomery County Public School year comes to a close Friday, the district needs to hire hundreds of teachers and other staff members for the upcoming year.

As of June 13, there were 581 unfilled positions. Meanwhile, 973 teachers have indicated they will be resigning or retiring.

When the previous school year ended, 668 – about one-third fewer – teachers had indicated their plans to resign or retire, according to a spokesperson for the Montgomery County Education Association...

As of October 30th, MCPS has 1,020 Open Positions, 371 Classroom Positions

9/15: 574 open positions; 274 of those are for classroom teachers

9/25: 712 open positions; 379 are for classroom teachers

10/2: 726 jobs, 370 of those classroom teachers

10/9: 863 openings, 370 of those classroom positions

10/16: 915 jobs 370 classroom positions

10/25: 928 jobs open; 368 classroom positions

MCPS Classroom Teacher Vacancies Continue to Rise: 379 Teacher Vacancies as of September 25th.

Classroom teacher vacancies continue to rise in Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS).  MCPS reported 283 classroom teacher vacancies at the start of the 2021-2022 school year, that number is now up to 379.  

The Parents' Coalition has learned that in total, MCPS is reporting 712 open positions as of September 25, 2021.

Montgomery County in Maryland started the year with 283 teacher openings (about 2%), compared to just 41 last year and 85 the year before.
