WPOST: Disinfectant on Springbrook HS football equipment causes rashes and burns

The football game between Sherwood and Springbrook, originally scheduled for Friday, has been moved to Monday at 6:30 p.m. after a disinfectant used on Springbrook’s football equipment caused players to experience rashes and burns.
Springbrook athletics director Rob Wendel said Springbrook staff members cleaned the locker room with “an appropriate disinfect inappropriately used.” He said the rashes and burns on the players’ necks and shoulders were serious enough for some players to seek medical attention.
Wendel said the school will be purchasing new equipment and is borrowing some for Monday’s game.

  1. This article does not even begin to scratch the surface of how bad these football players were burned. I am the mother of one, and someone in MCPS is seriously trying to cover their behinds...shame on you all!

    1. So, tell your side of the story. That's why the Parents' Coalition exists, to give a voice to parents.

  2. First lets just say that the school has not been forthcoming about who gave the orders to spray this "approved disinfectant" to begin with. Additionally, they need to say why there was even a need to disinfect in the first place...an apparent MRSA scare...that may have turned out to be Ezcema. There are 30+ players with either 1st, 2nd, or 3rd degree burns, or a combination of all three....so bad the local hospitals knew who we were when we walked in because so many kids had been their for treatment...we are still waiting for the school to send out an email to the parents...not just their internal staff and students

    1. I had no idea it was this extreme! As per usual there will be no accountability in MCPS. A system lacking in leadership and competence.

    2. This is truly an awful incident and I can't imagine the horror for both the students and their parents. Though your outrage is justified, I do not see the reason to blame MCPS here as it seems that it's on Springbrook HS to email their student body and their parents. Certainly it can't be the fault of the county that the employees of Springbrook disinfected their locker room inappropriately. As for how much they are telling us, that may be another story but I can't place blame on the county for something that seems to be a school issue.

  3. In other contexts, the requirement that janitors/housekeepers have a HS diploma or GED has been viewed with skepticism. The reality is that in institutional settings - hospitals, schools, restaurants - those who use cleaning chemicals need to understand how to handle them safely. If they can't read the directions, then you have situations like this one at Springbrook.
