The number of students enrolling in community colleges nationwide, including in the D.C. region, continues to decline, and it is leaving these institutions struggling to boost student numbers...
Enrollment decline: A struggle for DC-area community colleges | WTOP News
http://www.montgomerycollege.edu/ "The College serves nearly 54,000 students a year, through both credit and noncredit programs, in more than 100 areas of study."
ReplyDeleteThe 54,000 is a gross exaggeration of enrollment in the College.
DeleteMontgomery College's Fall 2017 enrollment as 22,875. https://parentscoalitionmc.blogspot.com/2019/04/montgomery-college-enrollment-dropping.html
I suppose they need to update their URL more frequently.
DeleteThey have no interest in posting the true college enrollment numbers.
DeleteServing 54,000 students a year is not the same as enrolling 54,000 students. The probably include every high school student who inquires about their programs in the 54,000. After, responding to an inquiry is a form of serving a student.
DeleteA student does not have to enroll to be counted in the number "served". When a high school student inquires about the MC programs, they might be counted as being "served" even without ever enrolling in a class.
DeleteIt sounds to me like a 'glorified' information clearinghouse serving the student community.
DeleteWhen we think of college courses, we think of college credit. Of teachers teaching, and students taking, courses that count towards a college degree.
ReplyDeleteHowever, when it comes to Montgomery College, *most* courses are not for credit, and *most* students take courses that are not for credit.
Of course, it's appropriate for a community college to offer *some* courses that are not for credit. But when *most* courses, and *most* faculty, are not for credit, is it unreasonable to ask whether that institution is actually a college?
