Judith Resnik Elem. School Principal Puts Back to School Night on Rosh Hashanah, Excludes Teachers and Families of the Jewish Faith. Does MCPS think this is Respecting Religious Diversity? @mcps @mocoboe
Whether the date of the event was set to coincide with Rosh Hashanah intentionally or not, the resistance of the school principal to change the date is clearly intentional, and demonstrates a clear lack of respect for other religions and cultures. The date must be changed, and the principal must issue a sincere apology that demonstrates she has learned from this episode. Any less is a clear indication of antisemitism.
No matter the number of families in the Resnick community celebrating one of the holiest days in the Jewish religion, being a safe, inclusive, respective environment is important. If the date could not be changed, a letter to the community admitting the error and a promise to do better is needed. If the principal is incapable of self reflection and providing for inclusivity for all community members, a career change should be considered.
As it is it’s strange to have a PTA function on a Friday evening. I think Judith Resnick may have been Jewish based on her name. A great insult to her name and the principle should be very ashamed and very ignorant of other cultures. The is a very holy day and this is disrepectable maybe even again Mcps policy
Resnik’s principal has consistency fostered a culture of respect and inclusiveness at the school. My children, and indeed our entire family, has had incredible experiences as a result of her approach to embracing the entire community with its diverse population. If a mistake was made, it was most certainly not intentional and measures are being taken to correct it. We love our principal and appreciate everything she does for our kids.
That's all lovely but community members reached out to us because when they notified the principal of the conflict, she ignored them. It moved past a mistake to deliberate.

ReplyDeleteThe date was changed yesterday already when the error was discovered. Parents were notified via letter and on school communication system.
