It's Labor day!

A good Labor Day to everyone. Grateful thanks to our parents, grandparents, relatives and friends who formed the unions, went on strike, risked life and limb, fought the goons, for American workers. Safe work spaces, child labor laws, doors that open outward, all because of our brave families and friends who put themselves on the line for better working conditions. Enjoy this holiday and remember why we have it!

Celebrate Labor Day!

On Labor Day, we say grateful thanks to our parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, friends who fought the goons, went on strike, formed unions in the face of violence and attempts at intimidation, and fought so hard for better working conditions. Thank you for OSHA. For doors that open outward. For 8-hour work days. For fair pay for an honest day's work.

Have a wonderful Labor Day

We are deeply grateful to our grandparents, parents, aunts, uncles, and everyone who fought so hard for the labor standards we enjoy today. Those who fought the goons. Who went on strike. Who got beaten up. Who were murdered. We remember all of you. Thanks to you we have: the right to organize; an 8-hour day; OSHA safety rules; child labor laws; doors that open outward.

We celebrate Labor Day with grateful thanks to all our grandparents, aunts, uncles, friends, parents who fought like hell for better working conditions; who fought the goons; who fought for 8-hour days, safe working environments, unions, and doors that open outward. We are forever in your debt.

Happy Labor Day

It's Labor Day. Thanks to all our forefathers and foremothers for putting their lives on the line and marching, fighting the goons, striking, organizing the unions, and working so hard for the lives we enjoy. Thanks for the 8-hour day, doors that open outward, safe working spaces, laws that allow our children to go to school and play instead of working in unsafe conditions, and more. We are grateful to you all.

Celebrate Labor Day!

Grateful thanks to all our aunts, uncles, parents, grandparents, great-grandparents and all who worked and fought so hard for the benefits we enjoy on Labor Day and every day. To those who fought, went on hunger strikes, went on strike, fought the goons and risked everything for fair pay for a fair day's work and safe working conditions, we are grateful.

Hogan then declared, “None of them [school board members] should be re-elected.”

Approximately 150 people gathered Sunday evening to thank Gov. Larry Hogan for his support of the Jewish community in an event sponsored by the Jewish Community Relations Council of Greater Washington.
Following his remarks at Beth Sholom Congregation in Potomac, dozens of people lined up to thank him for allocating money to area Jewish agencies, strengthening economic ties between Maryland and Israel, opposing the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement and supporting funds for scholarships to private schools.
But when a few people told Hogan they were disappointed he had moved up the starting date for public schools until after Labor Day, thereby causing County school officials to rework their calendar and possibly eliminate days off for Jewish holidays, Hogan’s demeanor changed.
“I’m outraged by the Montgomery County schools making the suggestion,” he said. “That’s nonsense.”
Hogan then declared, “None of them [school board members] should be re-elected.”
There are still 180 school days on the calendar, he said, noting it would be preferable for members of the school board to look at the nine teacher workshop days and “get rid of two of the nine days” instead of eliminating days off for religious holidays.
Following the one-hour event, Hogan said he believed he had a good relationship with the County...

Our hearts also go out to the Dreamers on this Labor Day. We are all part of the American fabric.

A majority of Maryland voters continue to support a post-Labor Day start for public schools

A majority of Maryland voters continue to support a post-Labor Day start for public schools, and they appear to not care that it came as the result of a controversial executive order mandating the change.
That’s the finding of a poll released Monday by the Sarah T. Hughes Field Politics Center at Goucher College.
Roughly 68 percent of the 668 Marylanders asked said they support a longer summer that delays the start of schools in the state until after Labor Day. The latest finding is within the margin of error to a 2014 poll that found 71 percent of people favored the later start.
“Public opinion really hasn’t shifted,” said Mileah Kromer, a political science professor and director of the poll. “I just wonder politically if this is a battle that Democrats in the legislature who oppose this want to have? I know there’s going to be push back. It’s a tough narrative that the public wants it.”
But not all Democrats oppose the effort. Former Gov. Martin O’Malley signed a petition to change school start date...

Governor Larry Hogan Signs Executive Order to Start School after Labor Day

August 31, 2016

Joins with Comptroller Peter Franchot Supporting Post-Labor Day Start Date to Benefit Families, Students, Teachers, and the Economy

ANNAPOLIS, MD – Governor Larry Hogan today signed an Executive Order that will require Maryland’s public schools to start classes after Labor Day, beginning with the 2017-2018 school year. Citing the benefits of a post-Labor Day school start for families, students, teachers, and the economy, the governor made the announcement on the Ocean City Boardwalk, where he was joined by Comptroller Peter Franchot, Ocean City Mayor Rick Meehan, Senator James Mathias, Delegate Mary Beth Carozza, education advocates, and other longtime supporters of a post-Labor Day school start.

“Starting Maryland public schools after Labor Day is not just a family issue – it’s an economic and public safety issue that draws clear, strong, bipartisan support among an overwhelming majority of Marylanders,” said Governor Hogan. “Comptroller Franchot and I believe, and the people of Maryland strongly agree, that this Executive Order puts the best interests of Marylanders first, especially the well-being of our students. This action is long overdue, and it is simply the right thing to do.”

The Executive Order signed today will require that Maryland’s public schools begin after Labor Day, complete the 180 days that are required under state law, and adjourn by June 15, beginning with the 2017-2018 school year. The executive order does permit for a waiver to be applied for with the Maryland State Department of Education to be exempt from the post-Labor Day start date. For the 2017-2018 school year and beyond, local school systems will have to apply annually for a waiver based on compelling justification. Furthermore, the State Department of Education will establish procedures and standards for school districts and individual schools seeking special waivers to accommodate non-traditional schedules...

Hogan, Franchot expected to make school-start announcement

Gov. Larry Hogan and Comptroller Peter V.R. Franchot will hold a news conference Wednesday in Ocean City where the governor is expected to announce an executive order pushing back the start of Maryland schools until after Labor Day, possibly as soon as next year.
Sen. James Mathias, D-Eastern Shore, said he and Ocean City Mayor Rick Meehan were invited to attend the event scheduled for 1 p.m. in front of the Lifesaving Museum on the Boardwalk.
“I know the subject of the event I just don’t know the substance,” said Mathias, who has sponsored bills pushing for a post-Labor Day start to the school year.
When asked if he expected the governor to announce an order to delay school starts in Maryland, Mathias said he did...

Happy Labor Day and Thank You

Parents Coalition thanks all the hard working teachers, parents, and taxpayers and union members who work so hard throughout the year to support our fellow citizens and contribute to the quality of life we enjoy in this county. The first Labor Day was held on September 5, 1882, in New York City. This year the Town of Kensington is holding its own 43rd Annual Labor Day Parade on Monday, September 6th.

Our grandparents, and great-grandparents fought and risked their lives for the working conditions we enjoy today; the 8-hour day; child labor laws; health and safety laws; and safe working conditions. According to the Department of Labor website,
“Labor Day, the first Monday in September, is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country.”

Labor Day thanks to the Teachers

Kudos to our teachers and labor unions on Labor Day! And thanks to our hard-working grandparents and great-grandparents who risked their lives to give us the 8-hour workday; child labor laws; doors that open outward rather than inward; and the health and safety laws we take for granted today. This is a picture of the first Labor Day Parade, in New York City, on September 5, 1882. According to the Library of Congress website,

"On September 5, 1882, some 10,000 workers assembled in New York City to
participate in America's first Labor Day parade. After marching from City Hall,
past reviewing stands in Union Square, and then uptown to 42nd Street, the workers and their families gathered in Wendel's Elm Park for a picnic, concert, and speeches."
