3 Teens Charged in Carjacking After Leaving @mcps Regional Institute for Children and Adolescents in Rockville

...The man got out of the vehicle, and three teenagers piled in and drove away, the police said.

At about the same time, the police said, they were notified that three teenagers — two 14-year-olds and a 15-year-old — had left without authorization from the Regional Institute for Children and Adolescents, a school and residential treatment facility for children and adolescents about a mile away...

As a reminder, the Maryland Dashboard uses the following criteria for reporting COVID-19 cases.  Not all cases are reported, only those that satisfy the following criteria.

Note: This dataset reflects public and non-public K-12 schools in Maryland that have COVID-19 outbreaks. Data are based on local health department reports to MDH, which may be revised if additional information becomes available. This list does not include child care facilities or institutes of higher education.

Schools listed meet 1 or more of the following criteria:

    1) At least two confirmed COVID-19 cases among students/teachers/staff within a 14-day period and who are epidemiologically linked, but not household contacts; or

    2) Three or more classrooms or cohorts with cases from separate households that meet the classroom/cohort outbreak definition that occurs within 14 days; or

    3) Five percent or more unrelated students/teachers/staff have confirmed COVID-19 within a 14 day period (minimum of 10 unrelated students/teachers/staff).

Cases reported reflect the current total number of cases. Schools are removed from the list when health officials determine 14 days have passed with no new cases and no tests pending. Archival data is available through the COVID-19 open data catalogue.

These data are updated weekly on Wednesdays during the 10 a.m. hour. MDH is continuously evaluating its data and reporting systems and will make updates as more data becomes available.

Kudos to Principal Darlene Simmons

The Parents' Coalition has looked at a lot of school audits over the years. We have even set up a web page and posted all of the audits that we have obtained. And we have written about the State Audit of MCPS

But in all of the school audits we have read, we have never seen a perfect one. Until now.

Congratulations to Principal Darlene Simmons on a perfect Audit from the Office of Legislative Audits, Department of Legislative Services of the Maryland General Assembly on the John L. Gildner Regional Institute for Children and Adolescents (also known as RICA).

Imagine if all Montgomery County Public Schools had an audit that said:

"Our audit did not disclose any findings that warrant mention in this report."

Cut to adolescent treatment facility

Gazette, Letter to Editor:  Can't afford to lose adolescent facility
Eliminating adolescent psychiatric beds at the [John L. Gildner Regional Institute for Children and Adolescents] is a cost to society well over the $800,000 in projected savings during fiscal year 2010. JLG-RICA combines a model Department of Health and Mental Hygiene facility and a first class Montgomery County school. In addition the RICA Association, a 501(c)3, provides the patients with funding to learn independent living skills, scholarships for graduates and reinforcements to help with behavior modification. The children served by JLG-RICA have already failed out of numerous, less-intense programs. JLG-RICA is the last hope for helping these kids become productive members of society. Gov. Martin O'Malley, Treasurer Nancy Kopp and Comptroller Peter Franchot — do not sacrifice our children.
