Take a look at THE WALL, as seen from the street level, that Superintendent Jerry Weast is constructing at the Cabin John Middle School modernization site.
Attempts to find THE WALL on the construction plans for this school site submitted to the County have as yet been unsuccessful, but we will keep you updated on our search. In the meantime, take a look at THE WALL that is now next to the sidewalk on Gainsborough Road. This is how the school site will look from the street level and this is only the beginning of THE WALL...

ReplyDeleteDon't understand why this is such a source of hyperventilation - it is just a retaining wall on a corner of the site and when finished will have a brick exterior. The drawings look just fine.
ReplyDeleteNot that I agree with the wall, because I don't. I believe the community was tricked. But, I'm sure the wall will be covered with brick, stone, or some other facing that will make it look more likable.
ReplyDelete10:20 Brick? You got that from where? There is no brick for this wall. MCPS bid "pebbles". Don't make up stories. Let's see the facts. Let's see the real plans that have been hidden from the community.
ReplyDelete10:20 & 7:56 please move to a neighborhood where you look out on a wall and see how that works for you. How do you feel about graffiti?
How do you feel about a parking lot being used as a hang out because no one driving by can see what is going on up there?
How about the school kids who attend the school? They better not be disabled in any way because the main entrance from the street will have 25 steps to climb to get to the entrance.
And a 4 foot high fence on top of 12 foot cement wall? How many middle school students will be able to easily climb over that and jump off the wall? Sounds like a great game.
For crying out loud. Brick, pebbles, whatever. It's a wall and from what I read in the park and planning 2009 documents, they said a wall was necessary due to the elevation issues of that site. Hmmmmm. Let me tell you a little something about kids and getting hurt on school property. Kids are on the roofs of schools very, very often no matter how hard it is made for them to not get up there. Whether it's with fencing or building layout, no matter, they get up there. By the way, about five years ago six or seven of CJMS's little angel girls were on the roof of the school right above the main entrance (two floors up) and found up there at 2 in the morning and their parents had no clue until they were called to get them! Maybe we should worry about parenting than whether a wall will bring down your property value.

ReplyDeleteThe planning documents don't say anything about a retaining wall at the street level.
When the Planning Board asked for the view of the school from street level, they weren't shown the Gainsborough retaining wall. (You can watch the video on the Planning Department site.)
Even Planning Department staff didn't know about a retaining wall on Gainsborough Road.
The overview slide shown to the Planning Board doesn't even show the 25+ steps that will lead from the street level up to the school entrance.
Do tell how you knew that a 12 to 14 foot retaining wall with a 4 foot metal fence on top would run along Gainsborough Road at the Cabin John Middle School modernization site!
