But #1 in the total number of graduates (by far). And much higher in graduation percentage than Prince George's, Baltimore City and Baltimore County, the three jurisdictions typically considered to have similar demographics.
ReplyDeleteIt all depends on which statistic is considered more reflective of what is being measured.
What is being measured is that MCPS is #1 in closing the achievement gap. That's what conference attendees are told all over the USA.
DeleteClearly, MCPS has not closed the achievement gap.
The achievement gap refers to disparities in performance among various demographic groups, typically measured by graduation rates, test scores, college admissions or some other measure believed to be representative of the comparative performance.
DeleteThe comparison you present here, however, does not discuss those types of disparities. Instead, this compares the performance in a measurement of the entire student population (percentage of graduates) across school systems. The previous comment points out that there are other statistics and potentially other relevant comparisons available from the data you cited. But none of those go to the achievement gap. So one simply cannot say that this data show anything about the achievement gap -- good or bad -- much less demonstrates one's preferred conclusion "clearly."
Clearly, you have never been to one of Jerry Weast's road show presentations. Jerry Weast closed the achievement gap in MCPS. That's his story and he is sticking to it. He doesn't need any data to show anything.
DeleteSee additional post on graduation rates for disparity between MCPS groups.
