MCPS paying 'expert' $130 an hour for COVID-related public relations help, records show


ROCKVILLE, Md. (7News) — Montgomery County Public Schools is paying a new, part-time employee $130 an hour to help improve its pandemic-related public relations, records obtained by 7News reveal.

  1. There's a major discrepancy between MCPS documents and Aggie's concerns. Aggie might be an employee, not a contractor.

    From the WJLA story:

    "In a September 9, email, Alvez wrote MCPS' Employee and Retiree Service Center to guarantee she was entitled to her full social security benefit.

    "I’d like to ensure that my first name is the name that I used throughout my entire career at MCPS (and all my other jobs)... This is the name on my social security card, my MCPS employee ID, my checking accounts, etc. I want to make sure all my earnings are credited with the Social Security Administration. Thank you so much for your help!""

    This is very odd because Aggie is working as a contractor, not as an employee. As a contractor, MCPS would not be paying half of her Social Security. MCPS would issue a 1099, not a W-2. As a contractor, Aggie would be paying both halves of the Social Security (self-employment tax). Something is not right with this situation.

  2. Does SSA really care how it is paid as long as it is getting paid in order to earn credit?
