Why are schools donating $152,200 to Strathmore Hall Foundation?

A letter to the Editor in the Gazette was titled:

Why are schools donating to Strathmore?

and asked this question:
...why does the Montgomery County Public Schools system take at least $50,000 (per page 16 of the Strathmore News, December 2010-February 2011) from its supposedly "bare bones" budget, and contribute it to the center?...
Good question! But wrong amount of money!

There is NO EVIDENCE of payments to the Strathmore Hall Foundation in Board of Education minutes.

However, what we know is that in FY 10 Montgomery County Public Schools paid $107,200 to the Strathmore Hall Foundation, Inc., and in FY 11 they have paid $45,000 to date. In the last year and a half, MCPS has paid $152,200 to the Strathmore Hall Foundation, Inc. Why?

We know this information thanks to the brand new database that MCPS was REQUIRED to post on their website under a Maryland law championed by Delegate Al Carr.

Thanks again, Delegate Carr!

  1. Interesting article in Gazette!
"Starting Sunday, the 12,000-plus-member McLean Bible Church — known for its senior pastor's "Not a sermon, just a thought" radio spots — will offer Sunday services at the Strathmore Music Center, making it the first religious organization to regularly rent the county-owned facility.

Church spokeswoman Annie Laurie Walters said her group has signed a rental agreement with Strathmore Hall Foundation, Inc. to make the 2,000-seat venue home to Bethesda congregants on Sunday mornings; the agreement includes use of the center's classrooms for Bible study. "
