Patch: Is the Northeast Consortium Shortchanging Springbrook High? (Part One)

Some Springbrook parents want more balance.
The average student at Springbrook High School is black and male. That student has nearly a 50-50 chance of being eligible for free or reduced meals, which is the main measure of poverty for Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS).
Those statistics, coupled with the fact that the school had nearly 350 unfilled desks this school year, has some parents concerned for the future of the school.
Springbrook is one of three high schools in the Northeast Consortium (NEC), a cluster of elementary, middle and high schools in East Montgomery County, where at the high school level, students can select a school based on their interests rather than where they live...
