Petition: Save Wheaton Stables

In the latest community meeting of the Montgomery National Capital Parks and Planning Commission (MNCPPC) the future of the Wheaton Park Stables (WPS) came up during the discussion of draft recommendations for Wheaton Regional Park.

Of the options for the WPS there were several suggested:

1. Moving the Brookside Nature Center/Visitor Center to the WPS site

2. Community gardens/urban agricultural facility

3. Retaining the rural feel of the site in an urbanizing area

The meeting noted that there are some investments being put into the current facilities and trails.  MNCPPC noted that the facility is currently 60 years old and that the facility's buildings and related infrastructure are well past their useful life and will soon require major investment.

Wheaton Regional Park is a wonderous gem in a rapidly urbanizing area and provides its users a quiet, soothing environment where people may reconnect to nature – something that we are all desperately in need of these days.  Wheaton Park Stables fits perfectly into the design and makeup of the park and replacing it with the alternatives above will significantly alter the natural beauty and tranquility of the park.  Additionally Wheaton Park Stables provides many programs and activities for disadvantaged youth in the area and remains a strong anchor for Wheaton Regional Park for people for all around the neighboring communities.  In fact, many people visit Wheaton Park Stables just for the opportunity to connect with the horses by visiting there and enjoying the landscape.

Montgomery County and, in particular, this area, was largely a rural, farming county in the not-to-distant past and we should not be so keen to throw that heritage onto the dustbin.  Wheaton Park Stables provides children of all ages and all walks of life from all around this area to experience a connection with nature and animals – and for those who choose to pursue an equestrian sport it represents an amazing first step into that world.  By erasing Wheaton Park Stables and converting the land to another use - even if that us is a community garden - the commission will be doing the neighboring communities a great disservice.

Please sign on and let's tell MNCPPC that we want to keep Wheaton Park Stables!

More than 16,500 Maryland students have quarantined since start of school year

More than 16,500 Maryland students and just under 800 staff have had to quarantine from a close contact with a COVID-19 case since the new academic year began, according to data from state education officials released Tuesday.

The Maryland State Board of Education’s first report on reopening logistics and transmission rate also tabulated that over 4,000 students and nearly 700 staff have tested positive for the coronavirus in the month since the start of the school year.

While the number of students with either known infections or in quarantine represents less than 3% of the system’s 882,000 enrollees, the new data offers a closer look at differences in how local schools have addressed vaccinations, testing, distancing requirements, contact tracing and contingency planning for outbreaks among students and educators...

MCPS Classroom Teacher Vacancies Continue to Rise: 379 Teacher Vacancies as of September 25th.

Classroom teacher vacancies continue to rise in Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS).  MCPS reported 283 classroom teacher vacancies at the start of the 2021-2022 school year, that number is now up to 379.

The Parents' Coalition has learned that in total, MCPS is reporting 712 open positions as of September 25, 2021.

Montgomery County in Maryland started the year with 283 teacher openings (about 2%), compared to just 41 last year and 85 the year before.

Still hiring: Teacher vacancies up as year begins, limiting recovery plans

...Montgomery County in Maryland started the year with 283 teacher openings (about 2%), compared to just 41 last year and 85 the year before. Schools there saw an uptick in teachers announcing plans to leave late in the summer, complicating recruiting efforts.

“When it gets that late in the year, the quality and number of candidates just isn’t there,” said Travis Wiebe, who works in Montgomery County’s human resources office...

How Maryland's statute of limitations undermines abuse survivors, including in Boy Scouts bankruptcy

...But if it weren’t for the bankruptcy case, which allowed for claims that fall outside of their state’s statute of limitations, Gillispie and other survivors in Maryland would stand virtually no chance of holding the Boy Scouts accountable in court.

That’s because lawmakers in Maryland have not provided a path for older survivors to sue, even as dozens of other states have reopened their statutes of limitations in child sexual abuse cases.

The Boy Scouts bankruptcy allows a rare chance to put numbers to how severely Maryland’s statute of limitations undercuts survivors’ legal options.

About 1,300 total claims against the Boy Scouts originated in Maryland, according to a group representing the survivors in court. (The exact number was still being tallied as of earlier this year.)

Of that number, only 13 claims fell within Maryland’s statute of limitations based on the survivor's age...

ONLY ON WTOP: Children’s National ER employee cites staffing shortage for 10-hour waits

Children’s National Medical Center, in D.C., is in the midst of a staffing shortage as COVID-19 continues to affect more unvaccinated children and winter viruses, such as RSV, arrive early this year. One employee told WTOP it’s contributing to the longest emergency room wait times in recent memory.

An emergency room employee at Children’s National, who spoke anonymously to WTOP, fearing repercussions, expressed concern for patients who are waiting for care and employees who are working shifts without adequate staffing in a pandemic. The worker said emergency room wait times at Children’s “routinely approach 10 hours,” saying it happens two to three times a week.

“We are at six hours pretty much every day now in the busy evening times,” the employee said...

Note: This dataset reflects public and non-public K-12 schools in Maryland that have COVID-19 outbreaks. Data are based on local health department reports to MDH, which may be revised if additional information becomes available. This list does not include child care facilities or institutes of higher education.

Schools listed meet 1 or more of the following criteria:

Classroom/cohort outbreak definition:

    1) At least two confirmed COVID-19 cases among students/teachers/staff within a 14-day period and who are epidemiologically linked, but not household contacts; or

School-wide outbreak definition:

    2) Three or more classrooms or cohorts with cases from separate households that meet the classroom/cohort outbreak definition that occurs within 14 days; or
    3) Five percent or more unrelated students/teachers/staff have confirmed COVID-19 within a 14 day period (minimum of 10 unrelated students/teachers/staff).

Cases reported reflect the current total number of cases. Schools are removed from the list when health officials determine 14 days have passed with no new cases and no tests pending. Archival data is available through the COVID-19 open data catalogue.

These data are updated weekly on Wednesdays during the 10 a.m. hour. MDH is continuously evaluating its data and reporting systems and will make updates as more data becomes available.

MCPS says that Special Attention will be given to cleaning, but at Gaithersburg Middle School there is no extra cleaning.

The Montgomery County Public Schools website has a COVID-19 Information webpage.

Under the section titled HEALTH AND SAFETY PROCEDURES, the Board of Education lists what will be done by MCPS building services staff during this COVID-19 pandemic.  The information posted to the MCPS website is shown in the image.

Note the description of building services staff duties related to COVID-19 Health and Safety Procedures is very, very vague.

The Parents' Coalition has been looking into what these Health and Safety Procedures look like in actual schools.

We have been informed that at Gaithersburg Middle School, for example, cleaning is at the same level as before the pandemic.

What is meant by "special attention" cleaning?  If schools are being cleaned at the same level as prior to the pandemic, what is "special attention" during the pandemic supposed to mean?

MCPS Says COVID-19 Changes in Place, but at Whetstone Elem. no extra cleaning, sinks not clean, out of wipes, toilet paper and paper towels. No Signature on Today's @mcps Message.

We have been informed that at Whetstone Elementary School there is no extra cleaning and  hand wipe supplies have already run out.  Restrooms are out of toilet paper and paper towels in many areas of the school, and restroom sinks are not being cleaned.

Is anyone in charge of MCPS' stated Health and Safety procedures? Is anyone exerting any oversight over these supposed procedures to see if they are in place in every school building across the County?

Today's message from MCPS wasn't even signed by anyone.

MCPS says that Restrooms in common areas are cleaned and disinfected more frequently, but that's not happening at Baker Middle School.

At Baker Middle School, the Board of Education's claimed changes to cleaning protocols are nonexistent.

MCPS Says Face Coverings/Masks will be provided for students, but at Gaithersburg Elementary teachers are providing their own supply of masks to students.

Why isn't the Board of Education doing what they have promised?

How can regular hand-washing be encouraged when the supplies needed to perform that action are not available to students?

Hand sanitizer stations placed throughout the building are only useful if they are kept supplied with hand sanitizer.
