Board Member: Overcrowded schools are fine!

Without so much as a discussion of the 539 classroom trailers in use around the county, the Board of Education gave away 20 acres of public school land for a non-school use for the next 10 years. They didn't even put it up for the highest bidder. They handed it over to County Executive Ike Leggett to use for whatever he wishes and at a "going out of business" price of $1,500 per year for the entire 20 acre parcel!

Despite what is reported in The Washington Post article linked below, the Board of Education has no clue has this land will be used. The Board of Education didn't even have a final lease before them when they voted to turn this land over to the County Executive. What is known is that when the Board of Education has reclaimed other school sites in the county they have had to pay the lessee for improvements made to the property. Taxpayers have had to pay to get back dedicated school land that was originally purchased to benefit public school students.
