On January 25, 2011, the Maryland State Board of Education reversed and remanded the Montgomery County Board of Education's rejection of two charter school applications.
On March 28, 2011, the Board of Education will respond to the State Board. Here's the resolution that the Montgomery County Board of Education will vote on.
Spoiler alert: They will vote to deny both applications again.
Board to Deny Charter Applications - Again
Well this is hysterical. The Board of Education just rejected half the public schools that already exist in the county.

Just described MCPS to a T.
"Crossway Community indicated that parents will assume the responsibility of transporting their children to school. This does not constitute an adequate transportation plan."
ReplyDeleteBut it is exactly what magnet parents would do under budget proposals circulated by MCPS.
"The application lacked information about the specific skills and knowledge that would be taught in the various disciplines at each grade level."

It is clear that ANY charter application is Dead On Arrival at the current MCPS Board of Education.
It appears to this parent that if the board had shared with the applicants the above concerns DURING the application process, these concerns could have been addressed by the applicants. When all is said and done, the Montgomery County Board of Ed. simply had no interest in doing anything to assist these schools in developing a plan to successfully meet the criteria that they have set forth.
ReplyDeleteThe Board of Education in the State of Maryland does appear to be too invloved with it's own beaurocracy and policy to look at what kinds of innovation and enrichment may be possible- when one attempts to "think out of the box"...which at this time is statistically impossible. I met the chief academic officer for the state and I can't believe that race to the top- is where we are going- it's like race to the top of the exact same hill over and over again. I would be putting my business plan together for a charter school right now if I thought it were possible- but I am discouraged at the system's inability to make any fair and objective decisions.
